MYOMECTOMY
Myomectomy for fibroid removal is recommended for women who want to preserve fertility. The procedure removes fibroids that are preventing the uterus from becoming pregnant or cause increased risk of miscarriage.
In most women fibroids grow in the muscle of the uterus and removing them while preserving the uterus is a more invasive procedure than a hysterectomy. Fibroids that are in the muscle require an incision in the uterus for removal, which can be deep in the muscle, and will require repair and a longer healing time. Also, fibroids generally tend to grow back and even after thorough fibroid removal, additional surgery may be necessary.
At CIGC, laparoscopic myomectomy is performed using the LAAM technique, with 2 small incisions and 10-14 days recovery time. LAAM myomectomy has no limitations when it comes to the size, number, or location of the fibroids.
HYSTERECTOMY
Hysterectomy is definitive fibroid removal surgery and it involves removal of the uterus. Post-operative recovery is generally much faster after hysterectomy vs myomectomy as there are no incisions that require healing in the muscle of the uterus. In most cases of laparoscopic or vaginal hysterectomy, the uterus is removed through the vaginal defect, with much smaller incisions used in the abdomen.
When the goal is to preserve fertility, a myomectomy is appropriate. If fertility is no longer a consideration and fibroids are recurring, a hysterectomy may be a better solution.
At CIGC, laparoscopic hysterectomy is performed using the DualPortGYN technique, with two 5 MM incisions and 1 week recovery time. Using a powerful technique called “retroperitoneal dissection”, DualPortGYN procedures allow for complete identification of all the structures of the pelvis to avoid injury to vital structures and provide a safe and effective surgery.
