For women dealing with fibroids, especially those looking forward to conceive, efficient and safe treatment is a major concern. When it comes to fibroid removal surgery, many procedures are still unnecessarily performed as open, or untrained specialists recommend hysterectomy. There are better options that women should be aware of. LAAM myomectomy has proven to be a safer & more effective myomectomy, with less complications and pain, and recovery in days rather than weeks. It is performed using only 2 small incisions and recovery time is less than 2 weeks. If you were told you need an invasive open myomectomy or a hysterectomy procedure for your fibroid removal, don’t hesitate to ask for a second opinion and get to know all of your options. When it comes to GYN health, symptoms that can be concerning to a woman are often dismissed by medical professionals as normal. Women rely on their doctor’s expertise and trust that there is nothing to worry about until they get really severe. If a GYN condition is present and causing concerning symptoms, you should address it early, before more damage occurs. You know your body best and it is important that you are your own best advocate when it comes to your GYN health.
GYN SYMPTOMS: WHAT IS NORMAL AND WHAT IS NOT?
Certain GYN symptoms are normal within a specific range. When you are outside of that range and feel like your symptoms are causing too much disruption, it’s time to see a specialist. If you feel your concerns are real, but have been dismissed, be proactive about your GYN health and get a second opinion. Look out for signs of abnormal bleeding and pelvic pain that could indicate a condition. Abnormal GYN bleeding is bleeding in between periods, heavy blood flow and large clots, bleeding longer than 7 days in a menstrual cycle or more than 35 days between periods, post-menopausal bleeding and bleeding after sex. Menstrual periods last approximately 7 days or less, with 21 to 35 days in between and women generally lose no more than 2.8 ounces (80 cc) of blood with each cycle. Anything outside of those ranges is abnormal bleeding. Severe pelvic pain that does not decrease with medication and/or affects the quality of life and daily activities is not normal. Severe pelvic pain associated with menstrual cycle could be a sign of endometriosis, where early detection and treatment is essential. DISMISSING SYMPTOMS DELAYS NECESSARY TREATMENT Women are often misdiagnosed for years and go on to struggle with GYN symptoms affecting their everyday life because they are not properly addressed. The right minimally invasive treatment can get women their energy back, prevents future damage and many times clears blocked paths to motherhood. In the end, you are your own best advocate and it is important to get a second opinion if you feel your concerns haven’t been fully addressed.
CIGC patient Michelle had progressively worse GYN symptoms for nearly 3 years. She consulted three different doctors, none of whom recognized the signs of endometriosis.
“When I asked the doctor if it could be endometriosis on my bowel, he dismissed it. He said ’10 percent of the population get endometriosis and 10 percent of them get endometriosis on their bowels.’ Even though my mother had it, he still dismissed it.” Michelle said. CIGC patient Rashetta was diagnosed with fibroids in college, but was advised to delay treatment. The problem with fibroids and the “wait and watch” method is that they will continue to grow and will eventually cause problems.
“For years I saw the same doctor, waiting and watching my fibroids grow, and for a while, the pain wasn’t altering my daily activities. But then, the pain got progressively worse. I found myself in bed, crying in pain.” said Rashetta. Read her full story here: Minimally Invasive Removal of Large Fibroids is Possible: Rashetta’s Story
