October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. We encourage all women to educate themselves when it comes to GYN conditions (like fibroids) getting in the way of having children, and to learn about the treatment options available. Large fibroids can make it difficult to conceive. They can also cause miscarriages and preterm labor. Seek specialty GYN care, in the early stages. CIGC surgical specialists Dr. Natalya Danilyants and Dr. Paul MacKoul use the advanced LAAM technique for minimally invasive fibroid removal to preserve fertility, and the DualPortGYN technique for resection of endometriosis. Treating GYN conditions before undergoing IVF, or attempting to conceive naturally, can improve outcomes. Roadblocks to female sterilization: a request for a tubal ligation procedure often means a 30 day wait period after signing a consent form. In addition, many physicians are unwilling to perform the procedure altogether. An alternative for more than a decade, the now maligned Essure device has been taken off the market. Due to the thousands of registered complaints to the FDA regarding Essure, we chose to only offer surgical sterilization procedures at our facility. The goal is to reduce the overall risk, and our procedures are performed with 5MM incisions in an outpatient setting so patients go home the same day, with very little down time.

Despite the remarkable advancements in surgical GYN techniques, many women still undergo open procedures for hysterectomy and myomectomy. Open surgery is no longer necessary to achieve the desired outcomes, as these procedures can be safely and thoroughly performed with minimally invasive approach, leading to a quicker and easier recovery for the patient. Celebrities such as Australian clothing designer Thessy Kouzoukas, singer Monica, Real Housewife Bethenny Frankel, who publicly speak about their GYN condition, also announce treatment with open surgery. Despite the implication that celebrities can afford access to the best level of care, these women are actually undergoing out-of-date procedures, with long, painful recoveries. When it comes to complex GYN conditions such as large fibroids and extensive endometriosis, it's important to seek specialty GYN care. CIGC surgical specialists Dr. Paul J. MacKoul, Dr. Natalya E. Danilyants MD and Dr. Rupen P. Baxi focus 100% on advanced minimally invasive GYN surgery, and never perform more invasive open or robotic surgeries. Surgeries are performed using 2 small incisions only, and women recover in a matter of days. Iron is used in red blood cells to bind oxygen for transport throughout the body. Millions of women may suffer iron deficit anemia – many times without even knowing it. Experts estimate about 27 percent of women of reproductive age have anemia. Heavy menstrual bleeding caused by complex GYN conditions like uterine fibroids or adenomyosis can lead to anemia. Prolonged, heavy bleeding causes the body’s supplies of iron to be exhausted. Heavy Menstrual Bleeding and Anemia: Know the Signs
The most common sign of anemia is fatigue that shows limited improvement with rest. Unfortunately, today’s demanding lifestyles mean women experience this without knowing it is connected to a medical issue. Fatigue is often accompanied by other symptoms of iron deficiency, such as:
If you experience these symptoms, you should see a physician for an evaluation. As anemia progresses, complications become systemic and severe. Heart failure, angina, long-term arrhythmia and heart attack all become more likely as anemia goes untreated. Even so-called “mild” anemia is a serious matter. More about the dangers in this CIGC blog. Treat GYN Conditions With Advanced GYN Surgery Heavy menstrual bleeding caused by GYN conditions such as fibroids and adenomyosis can be relieved with minimally invasive GYN surgery. Fibroids can be removed via myomectomy to preserve fertility, or hysterectomy as definitive treatment. The only definitive treatment for adenomyosis is hysterectomy. CIGC founders Dr. Natalya Danilyants and Dr. Paul J. MacKoul use advanced surgical techniques to perform laparoscopic procedures. LAAM is used to achieve fibroid removal with preservation of the uterus for fertility. DualPortGYN is used to perform minimally invasive hysterectomy. Women recover in less than 2 weeks after these procedure. Get In Touch Call 888-SURGERY or contact us online to get in touch with a CIGC specialist. CIGC hysterectomy patient Heather from Arlington, Virginia was initially diagnosed with fibroids in 2011. The largest one was the size of a golf ball. Heather was not interested to preserve fertility and she considered getting a hysterectomy, but did not want an open surgery as her doctor suggested. At the time she chose to treat the fibroids with birth control pills.
Waiting to treat fibroids can lead to worsening GYN symptoms. As fibroids continue to grow, they can distort the uterus, increase pain and blood loss. “The pain increased daily. Apparently my fibroids were ‘banging into each other’. Per my coworkers I was hunched over and paler than normal (some even stated I looked green). I was worn out from the pain and the fibroids themselves. The pain was pretty awful, but I tried not to focus on it. In fact, I didn’t realize exactly how bad it was until it was completely gone after my surgery. What a difference!” Heather said. DISCOVERING CIGC’S ADVANCED MINIMALLY INVASIVE TECHNIQUES Heather’s friend heard a radio ad for The Center for Innovative GYN Care. “She knew I was having a lot of pain and was becoming a bit down at the prospects of having them removed, or going through a bikini cut surgery. I have a very demanding job that I love, and I just couldn’t be away from work for weeks at a time or possibly months. I had heard nightmares about recovery times from hysterectomies including things like not being able to do stairs, not being able to lift more than 15 lbs, not being able to well….do much of anything. It was quite disheartening.” “After I received the information on CIGC, I was given hope. My outlook on having a hysterectomy slowly changed the more I read about what the different procedures were and the recovery times. All of the procedures are minimally invasive and the recovery times almost seemed too good to be true! I began researching reviews on CIGC and found some pretty amazing stories of relief and recovery from various conditions such as fibroids.” DUALPORTGYN HYSTERECTOMY AT CIGC At CIGC, hysterectomy is performed using the advanced DualPortGYN technique developed by Dr. Natalya Danilyants MD and Dr. Paul J. MacKoul MD. The laparoscopic procedure uses two 5 mm midline incisions. They are placed in cosmetically appealing locations so they are barely noticeable once they heal. As these incisions go through the midline, not through muscle, post-operative recovery is faster and with less pain. Women are usually back to work within 1 week. “I am thrilled that this was an outpatient surgery with only one 5mm incision in my lower belly and one in my bellybutton. The DualPortGYN procedure was used and I am so very very thankful that I went to CIGC for this procedure. I felt safe and well cared for. I knew I was in good hands.” RECOVERY AFTER OUTPATIENT SURGERY Heather had her outpatient minimally invasive hysterectomy the day before Thanksgiving and she was able to have dinner with her family and enjoy the holiday the next day. “Every day after that surgery I have been able to do more and more and the pain/discomfort has become less and less. Two weeks after my surgery I was able to put up my 7 1/2 ft Christmas tree and decorate it by myself without any help. I was able to return to work 10 days after my surgery. That is amazing. I have not had any discomfort while sitting at my desk working…which is new to me as I was in agony for quite a few months. It’s been almost a month since my surgery and what a difference! I have more energy. I am not in pain. I’m able to do so much more now and I grow stronger every day. It is literally a night and day difference since my surgery.”

It takes a skilled specialist to recognize the signs, and it is important that women seek help early. According to the Endometriosis Foundation of America it takes 10 years from symptom onset to receive an accurate diagnosis of endometriosis. The more it takes to get a diagnosis and treatment, the more damage endometriosis can cause. Thorough and deep endometriosis excision is essential to relieve symptoms long-term and it should be performed by a specialist. If surgery is performed incorrectly, it can make the condition worse. Women should seek an experienced surgeon, who is able to perform the procedure with minimally invasive approach. At CIGC, endometriosis excision is performed using the DualPortGYN technique, developed by Natalya Danilyants MD and Paul MacKoul MD. The approach uses only two 5 MM incisions and recovery time is 7-10 days. Learn more about endometriosis symptoms & minimally iinvasive treatment in this recent blog: Endometriosis Pain Is Real. It takes a skilled GYN specialist to recognize the symptoms and perform efficient minimally invasive excision to relieve pain. Many times women go through years of unsuccessful attempts trying to get pregnant and later discover that GYN surgery can actually clear the path. Bela from Vienna, Virginia struggled with fertility treatments and surgery for nearly a decade. She even tried surrogacy, but all attempts were unsuccesful. Last year she came to CIGC for minimally invasive resection of endometriosis as a last attempt before seeking donor eggs. Her next IVF cycle was succesful and Bela got pregnant with twins. “On my 10th IVF cycle after the resting period, we got three eggs out of which 1 was mature and 2 were immature. The IVF clinic matured the immature eggs and we got three fertilized embryos. 2 embryos implanted and gave me my first ever successful pregnancy in 10 years. I was convinced that endometriosis was certainly ruining me in the past.” “My twins were born early at 32 weeks as I had other issues during the pregnancy. We had a rough start but we all are doing good now. It still feels surreal. I had several failed IVFs, too many infertility issues and several losses. I could never imagine having a baby in my arms. And now I have 2 of them!” CIGC surgical specialists Rupen Baxi MD, Natalya Danilyants MD and Paul MacKoul MD use the DualPortGYN approach for resection of endometriosis. This is an outpatient surgery and the technique uses only two 5 MM incisions. Most women are back to work within 1 week. Heavy GYN bleeding can also be dangerous as it can cause anemia. The dangers of anemia include life-threatening complications such as congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, and/or heart attack. Women who struggle with these symptoms should get evaluated by a GYN specialist who can determine the cause and provide safe and efficient treatment. When it come to fibroids, they can be removed with minimally invasive myomectomy, which at CIGC is performed with the advanced LAAM technique (two small incisions and recovery in 10-14 days). Definitive fibroid treatment can be achieved with a minimally invasive hysterectomy, performed at CIGC with the DualPortGYN technique (two 5 MM incisions and 1 week recovery time). Both techniques have been developed by CIGC physicians Dr. Paul MacKoul and Dr. Natalya Danilyants. Definitive treatment of adenomyosis is also achieved with hysterectomy.

Laparoscopic specialists are trained in minimally invasive techniques, allowing the patient a faster recovery, with less pain. This large gap in knowledge can lead women to ignore common symptoms like pelvic pain and heavy bleeding which aren’t normal. Over 50% of American women are unclear about GYN conditions and surgical treatment options. Getting the wrong treatment can actually worsen conditions, which is why it is important for women to become their own best advocates when it comes to GYN health, and always seek a second, third or even fourth opinion if they aren’t getting answers about their symptoms or condition. If you are not improving, you need to find a specialist who can tell you exactly why you are experiencing these symptoms, and give you the best answers for treatment based on the progress of the condition and your long-term goals. Fear to get treated or not getting the right answers from doctors often makes women delay treatment, which can lead to further damage to reproductive organs. Young patients suffering from fibroids or endometriosis end up having to get a hysterectomy as the damage becomes too severe to save the uterus. As women age, the number and quality of their eggs decrease. Combined with a GYN condition, this can severely decrease chances to successfully conceive and carry to term.
