CIGC’s Advanced Laparoscopic Procedures DualPortGYN and LAAM Do Not Require Power Morcellation
The use of power morcellators in GYN surgery has been banned in many hospitals as it can potentially lead to life threatening complications. The first power morcellation devices for gynecological purposes were approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1995 to allow GYN surgeons to remove large fibroids. Power morcellators break down, or “morcellate,” the uterus and fibroids into smaller pieces to allow removal through laparoscopic ports. The uterus or a fibroid within the uterus may contain a cancer known as a sarcoma. If a sarcoma is present and inadvertently morcellated, the cancer stage will be much more advanced due to the sarcoma exposure throughout pelvis and abdomen.

In July 2015 the FDA held an important meeting to discuss the risks of the approach with the Obstetrics and Gynecology Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee. They concluded that the incidence of cancer is higher than previously thought in women undergoing surgical treatment of fibroids. Based on the gathered information and discussions, the FDA now discourages the use of laparoscopic power morcellation to remove uterine fibroids and uteri.
